Mexican Nacho Recipes:
How to Make the Ultimate Nachos!

Mexican nacho recipes really make for fun eating-- and all you need is to have a few simple ingredients on hand.

Where do nachos come from? Well, the original dish was created in the Southwestern United States, and was simply cheese melted over fresh tortilla chips and topped with jalapeño slices.

Pretty basic, right? But that's a good thing. Because recipes with a few ingredients, like nachos, are hugely flexible, and can change based on the quality of the ingredients you choose: from simple Mexican cheese nachos to the ultimate nacho recipe complete with meat, beans, and veggies.

Your Basic Nacho Ingredients

When you're looking at different Mexican nacho recipes out there, you'll see a lot of the same ingredients repeated again and again.

The basic ingredients for nachos include:

  • Tortilla chips
  • Cheese (a mild version)
  • Salsa
  • Spices
  • Toppings

The Chips and Cheese for Nachos

If you can get them, fresh tortilla chips are recommended in any of the Mexican nacho recipes you'll see below. Why? Because they are lighter and crispier than many commercially made products. If you can find Mexican queso fresco, pick that up, too. It's mild and tasty, and melts a bit softer than a standard cheddar-- the perfect texture for nacho cheese.

Choosing Salsa for Your Nacho Recipe

One of the most popular toppings for nachos is salsa, of course. We associate salsa with chopped tomatoes, onions and peppers but salsas are not limited to this basic form.

Chopped fruits that are used as a sauce to compliment foods can also be considered a salsa. Salsa verde, a green salsa made from tomatillos, is traditional in Mexico but is less common in the United States. When creating your own nachos consider using ingredients with an authentic Mexican flare! Try a salsa with tomatillos, chipotle, you name it!

My ULTIMATE Nacho Recipe: Deluxe Beef Nachos

Ultimate Nachos Recipe- the Ultimate Mexican NachosThe best Mexican nacho recipes achieve a balance between the tortilla chips and the toppings. This recipe forms the base for more elaborate nachos but still has some authentic Mexican flavors.

Vegetarians often enjoy this dish with pinto or black beans instead of ground beef. Or you can try this exact same recipe with shredded chicken or pork-- it's really wonderful! I've even had it with chopped shrimp and crab for a deluxe seafood nacho recipe.

Ingredients:

Beef Mixture:
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 onion, chopped fine
3 cloves garlic, minced
8 ounces tomato sauce
8 ounces tomato paste
3 cups water
2 1/2 teaspoons oregano
2 teaspoons cumin
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup uncooked white rice

Nachos:
3 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
3 large tomatoes, chopped
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
1/2 head iceberg lettuce, chopped
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
10 ounces tortilla chips

Instructions: 1. The first part of this Mexican nacho recipe is to prepare the beef mixture. In a large pan, brown the ground beef. Add the onions and garlic and cook for 3-4 minutes on medium or until the onions are translucent. Drain the fat from the beef and return it to the pan.

2. Heat pan to medium high and add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, water, oregano, cum, chili powder, salt and rice. Cook the mixture 15-20 minutes or until rice is tender. Cover and lower the heat. Simmer 30 minutes.

3. Layer tortillas on a plate. If desired, sprinkle with cayenne pepper and top the tortillas with 2 tablespoons of beef and rice mixture and small portions each of cheese, chopped tomatoes, cilantro and lettuce. Serve as a main course or appetizer.

Creating a Nacho Bar for a Party

Hosting, say, a Mexican fiesta and want to let your guests make up their own Mexican nacho recipes as they go?

You can create a nacho bar by placing toppings in serving bowls along a serving table. Some nacho toppings ideas are:

  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Canned black beans
  • Sour cream
  • Guacamole
  • Salsa (different varieties)
  • Chopped green and/or red onions
  • Sliced jalapeño peppers
  • Cheese (different varieties)
  • Sliced Black Olives
  • Beef, Chicken, Pork, or other Meat

This way each person can customize their nacho flavors and make their own version of an ultimate nacho recipe.

It's a good ideas, though to encourage guests to choose just three or four toppings. This will allow them to focus on the individual taste of ingredients and maximize the authentic flavor. Remember that nachos were originally intended to be simple snack food. Too many ingredients can confuse the taste buds and it will taste like every other nacho you have ever eaten.

Making great Mexican nacho recipes is easy if you use a few quality ingredients and keep it simple! But feel free to go nuts with your nachos if that's what you're into. After all, they're supposed to be fun!
