Puff Pastry Appetizer Recipes:
Easy Party Food!

Puff pastry appetizer recipes vary from sweet to savory, from complex to simple. And that means any recipes using puff pastry sheets are going to be a great option for creating all kinds of party food fare.

What is puff pastry? This French pastry is actually folded over and over with butter to create layers of dough that puff up as the steam escapes from the dough during baking. One of the benefits of puff pastry is that it does not contain sugar. This makes the pastry versatile for use in both savory treats --like some of the puff pastry appetizer recipes here-- and desserts, too.

Tips for Using Puff Pastry

Keeping it Light and Crispy. If you want puff pastry to rise, however, it is important that you cut it with a sharp knife rather than crush the layers together or twist when you are cutting. A dull cut will crimp the edges of the layers together and prevent the puff that is so light and fun.

Creating Appetizers with Puff Pastry. The layers of puff pastry can be:

  • Folded entirely around a filling,
  • Wrapped around a food (chicken, cheese, etc.),
  • Left open like a basket, or
  • Docked to create an appetizer (see below).

"Docking" Puff Pastry. You can prevent parts of the pastry in your appetizer from rising by docking it. Docking is the process of putting small holes in pastry to allow steam to escape. When the middle of a pastry square is docked like this it will form an indention to hold your fillings.

Feta-Spinach Party Puffs Recipe

Feta Spinach Triangles Puff Pastry Appetizer Recipe IdeaThis puff pastry appetizer recipe is inspired by Spanakopita, a Greek layered pastry with spinach and feta cheese. It's just as bursting with flavor, but a lot simpler to make and a ton of fun to eat.

This is a good vegetarian puff pastry recipe if you want to have a vegetarian option available at your party. The Mediterranean flavors are to die for!

Crab Napoleon Appetizer with Puff Pastry

This puff pastry appetizer recipe is a total classic! And for a reason: it's totally decadent and delicious. The puff pastry gently holds the crab and cream cheese mixture, making a concoction that practically melts in your mouth.

This appetizer is one of my favorite recipes using puff pastry sheets, because it's so flexible-- whatever the time of year or your budget, it's easy to make year round with frozen or canned crabmeat.

Cheese and Onion Puff Pastry Tart Recipe

Onion and Cheese Appetizer Recipe using Puff Pastry SheetsCheese and onions form a delicious marriage of flavors in a tart recipe that is surprisingly sweet from the sugars in the onions. This one is really easy to put together --you can do the onions up ahead of time, and simply bake before serving-- and can be served in small bites for an appetizer, or larger slices for a first or second course.

This is one of those puff pastry appetizer recipes that looks like a lot more work than it actually is!

1 sheet puff pastry
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 sweet onions, thinly sliced
salt and pepper, to taste
6 ounces shredded Gruyère cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons chives, chopped

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Thaw pastry sheet at room temperature until pliable.

2. Over medium heat sauté onions in oil (add salt and pepper to taste) until golden brown and caramelized. Stir often. Season to taste with salt and pepper and set aside to cool.

3. Unfold pastry sheet on floured surface and roll to 12 inch square. Place dough on baking sheet. Brush edges with water and fold half an inch of each side over. Crimp edges with a fork to form a raised edge. Use fork to dock the middle of the tart. (Check puff pastry tips above for how to do this!)

4. Place onion mixture in middle of square and top with Gruyere, parmesan and chives. Bake 20 minutes and then cool on a wire rack. Cut into squares and serve warm. (Like most recipes using puff pastry sheets, this is also good at room temperature.)
